DA185 Now Mandatory for Certain Excise Activities

This article will count 0.25 units (15 minutes) of unverifiable CPD. Remember to log these units under your membership profile.

From 3 February 2026, businesses must complete and submit the registration or licence application form DA185 to apply for, or renew, permission to conduct the following excise-related activities:

  • If your business handles (stores, controls or uses) fuel that contains specially marked or rebated fuel, you must be registered with SARS.

  • If you supply aviation fuel (jet fuel or aviation petrol) that qualifies for a rebate, you need SARS approval.

  • If you manufacture products from fuel components that cannot be used in any engine, you must be registered with SARS for that activity.

The completed DA185 form, together with all applicable annexures, must be submitted at the nearest SARS branch office where the applicant’s business premises are registered.

For further information, enquiries can be directed to RLARegistrations@sars.gov.za.

Businesses operating in these areas should review their current permissions and ensure compliance to avoid disruptions to their operations.
