What time do you usually wake up on weekends?
09:00 AM
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Early Bird
How do you spend the first hour of your day?
I usually spend the first hour of my morning getting myself ready for work.
What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?
My interest in accounting started when a circuit manager once suggested that I should consider becoming a CA(SA). That comment set me on the path to study accounting, but it was only once I began working in the field that I realized it was the industry I truly wanted to build my career in.
Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?
Qualifying was definitely a key milestone for me. Achieving something that once felt so difficult and almost out of reach showed me that it was possible.
What is your role within your company’s finance department?
I serve as the group financial accountant in the company’s finance department.
How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?
In group finance, I work alongside the financial manager to compile and analyze financial data, ensuring it supports and aligns with the company’s strategic goals.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was taking on several tasks during our financial year-end that normally fall under the financial manager’s responsibilities. Balancing those additional duties with my own work wasn’t easy, but with strong support from the team, I managed to adapt quickly. The experience pushed me to grow and develop faster in my role.
Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.
I find that keeping an adequate and realistic to-do list makes a big difference, and setting boundaries around my availability helps me maintain balance during busy times. I also make sure to have an outlet, like going to the gym or doing something that boosts mental clarity and improves my mood.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy exploring new restaurants with my partner.
Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department?
I recently started working with an intern, which felt a bit daunting at first since I hadn’t coached anyone in over two years. But I’ve fully embraced the experience, and it’s turned into one of the most rewarding parts of my work right now.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?
Strong technical knowledge and understanding of standards are important, but they’ll only take you so far. What really sets you apart is your work ethic, adaptability, and willingness to go the extra mile.
“A man’s life is what his thoughts make it”
Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career
Even though machines can handle the work, our real value lies in our ability to interrogate and analyze the data to provide meaningful insights for the business.
What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?
I have a twin, and interestingly, we share the same birth month and day with our younger sister.
If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?
I would choose the ability to predict financial trends.
If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?
I would relive the day of the articles sign-off. Audits have their own team, and I wasn’t originally meant to be part of that milestone, which made it feel extra special.
