Growing up, Mlondi Clive Dube found focus through chess. Today, he applies the same strategic mindset as a Professional Accountant at Brand van Niekerk & Co Inc, guiding clients through complex financial moves and mentoring future professionals. He’s not just crunching numbers; he’s shifting narratives in his community. The first in his family, and his area, to earn the PA(SA) designation, Mlondi is proof that the accounting profession isn't just about compliance. It's about leadership, legacy, and lifting others as you climb.

What time do you usually wake up on weekends?

06:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Night Owl

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

I usually spend the first hour of my morning reading self-help books to start the day with focus and motivation.

What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?

My interest in accounting and finance started in high school, where I enjoyed working with numbers. I also joined the chess club, which helped me learn how to handle pressure and challenges while making accurate decisions.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?

One of my key milestones was becoming the first professional accountant in my family and community. It was a remarkable achievement for me and, more importantly, a way to inspire others, showing them that if I could do it, they can too. The doors are open for everyone to become the heroes of their own stories.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?

I work as a Senior Accountant, where I provide full accounting services to trainees. My role includes preparing and reviewing accounting reports, analyzing budgets, and compiling financial statements.

How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?

I contribute by sharing ideas that help clients make cost-effective decisions and by guiding them on how to properly maintain their financial records.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was balancing time and pressure when adapting to my new role after recently qualifying. I overcame this by creating a daily system to stay organized, using checklists to track my tasks, and keeping myself motivated with small rewards, like a piece of candy at the end of the day.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?

I use checklists to stay organized, prioritize meeting all deadlines, and ensure clients are protected from unnecessary tax payments.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.

I stay balanced during busy periods by preparing daily checklists and ensuring that I complete nearly all tasks, around 99.9%, by the end of each day.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy reading self-help books, playing long games of chess, and watching sports with my family, which helps me recharge and relax.

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department?

Yes, I mentor a variety of people both at work and outside of work. I believe that once you’ve found a formula for working effectively, it should be shared so others can benefit. I focus on fostering unity, respect, and smart working practices to help develop the skills of others.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?

I would advise aspiring finance professionals to avoid settling into comfort and to focus on running their own race. Be prepared for challenges, and once you succeed, help others succeed as well. In a finance or accounting role, it’s important to keep your accounting skills sharp, learn how to optimize tax savings for clients, and enjoy the journey of becoming a true professional.

Run your own race and failure is a phase to greatness, never give up.

A valuable leadership lesson I’ve learned is to stay humble and find joy in your career journey.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?

Something surprising about me is that I enjoy reading self-help books, playing chess, and following a variety of sports.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?

I would choose the ability to master multitasking.

If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?

If I could relive one day from my career, it would be the day I started my accounting career as a trainee. It was a significant decision because it meant stepping into a new world beyond home and school, full of challenges and opportunities to grow.

This is the new face of accounting. Real. Resilient. Relatable.
