Artificial intelligence is transforming the accounting profession, but new research suggests that clients still place greater value on trusted relationships than on fully automated services.

A recent report title The Future of Client Trust in the Age of AI issued by Karbon, an accounting practice management software provider found that while clients appreciate the efficiencies AI can bring, most do not want AI to replace their accountant. Instead, they prefer accountants to use AI to enhance the service they already provide.

AI Should Support, Not Replace

Across a range of accounting services, clients consistently preferred either a human accountant or a human supported by AI over a fully AI-driven experience.

This preference extended to services such as tax planning, payroll, compliance, financial planning and advisory work. Even for routine tasks like payroll processing, respondents were more comfortable with an accountant overseeing the work than leaving it entirely to AI.

The findings suggest that clients still value professional judgement, accountability and human oversight, even as firms adopt new technologies.

Trust Matters More Than Technology

Perhaps the most significant finding was why clients choose an accountant in the first place.

The survey found that trust and perceived integrity were the most important reasons clients selected their accountant, while technology ranked among the least important factors. Although younger businesses showed slightly greater interest in technology, trust became increasingly important as businesses matured. For established businesses, a long-term relationship with a trusted adviser was far more valuable than the latest software or client portal.

Relationships Remain the Competitive Advantage

When asked what AI could never replace, clients rarely mentioned technical expertise or tax knowledge.

Instead, they highlighted the personal relationship they have with their accountant—someone who understands their business, remembers previous conversations, provides reassurance during difficult times and offers advice based on years of experience.

Clients also felt that human accountants are better equipped to deal with complex or unusual situations where professional judgement is required.

AI Creates Value When It Frees Up Time

The survey found that clients do not necessarily expect lower fees simply because AI makes work faster. Rather, they want accountants to use the time saved to deliver more value through proactive advice, strategic discussions and a deeper understanding of their business.

More than four out of five respondents (80%) said they would find their accountant more valuable if AI reduced routine work and the time saved was reinvested in regular strategy discussions and personalised advice.

Transparency Is Becoming Essential

The research also showed that clients expect firms to be open about how they use AI. Nearly nine out of ten respondents wanted at least some transparency regarding the use of AI in delivering professional services, with most preferring full disclosure.

As AI becomes more integrated into accounting practices, having a clear AI policy and explaining how technology supports client service may become an important part of building trust.

Why This Matters

The message from the research is clear: clients are not looking to replace their accountant with artificial intelligence. They are looking for accountants who use AI to become better advisers.

For accounting firms, the opportunity is not simply to work faster, but to use the efficiencies created by AI to strengthen client relationships, provide more proactive advice and deliver greater value. In the age of AI, technology may improve efficiency, but trust remains the profession's greatest asset.
