At this week’s SAI20 summit, the first ever on African soil, Deputy Finance Minister Dr. David Masondo made it clear, South Africa is using its G20 Presidency to shine a light on Africa’s needs. SAI stands for Supreme Audit Institutions or auditor generals.

In his speech, Masondo stressed the importance of infrastructure and skills as the backbone of economic growth. He said government audits, especially from institutions like the Auditor-General, are key to making sure money is spent wisely and that projects deliver real value.

We’re upgrading roads, ports, electricity, and schools—not just for show, but to truly improve lives,” he said.

He also highlighted that with limited government funds, private investment is crucial. To attract that money, clean audits and strong governance are non-negotiable.

Masondo praised South Africa’s shift toward data-driven, proactive auditing, calling it essential to prevent waste and corruption.

On education and jobs, he noted that audits help identify where the system is failing and where urgent fixes are needed, making them just as important as any classroom.
