South Africa may soon be off the FATF greylist, and that’s big news for accountants, banks, and business. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Africa Joint Group wrapped up its final on-site visit in Pretoria on 29–30 July. This visit is the last hurdle before FATF decides in October whether to remove SA from its greylist.
Why it matters
Since getting greylisted in February 2023, South Africa has worked through all 22 action items required to beef up its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) systems.
The FATF team met with government officials, financial institutions, and regulators — ending the trip with a sit-down with Deputy Ministers David Masondo (Finance) and Andries Nel (Justice). Both assured FATF of South Africa’s ongoing political commitment to keeping financial crime in check.
What’s next?
FATF will review the findings at its October 2025 Plenary. If all goes well, South Africa could finally shake off its greylist status — opening the door to increased investor confidence and easing global financial transactions.
📅 Verdict expected: 24 October 2025

Keep an eye out — this decision could be a turning point for SA’s economy and financial credibility.
