From the Treasury Desk: How Wisani Yingwani Learned to Say "No", and Earned Respect Doing It
When you're handling the cash flow for a group of companies, everyone wants a favour. Wisani Yingwani knows this firsthand. As Treasury Accountant at Impuma Group, he's had to draw hard lines, and stick to them. What started as a love for numbers in high school turned into a career shaped by grit, strategy, and a refusal to bend under pressure. In a world where being “too nice” can break a business, Wisani has found strength in structure, and a little Formula 1 on the weekend.

How do you spend the first hour of your day?
I usually start my morning by planning my day, taking a shower, having breakfast, and then getting started with work.
What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?
My interest in accounting started in high school when I discovered how much I enjoyed working with numbers. From then on, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in accounting.
Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?
One of my biggest career milestones was completing my Bachelor’s degree. It wasn’t an easy journey, as I faced many personal challenges along the way, so finishing it was a proud moment for me. Another defining moment was being declared competent and earning my title as a Professional Accountant (SA).
What is your role within your company’s finance department?
I’m responsible for managing the treasury function for the group of companies.
How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?
Yes, I do contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was dealing with suppliers who asked for their payments to be processed before the due date. I had to make it clear that I treat all suppliers equally and that payments are only processed according to company policy.
What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?
I use a structured work plan and process flow, which I follow closely. This helps me stay organized and ensures that my work is both effective and efficient.
Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.
Having a clear work plan helps me stay balanced, especially during busy times. I make sure to stick to my schedule and follow through with what I’ve planned for each day.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy watching Formula 1, cricket, soccer, and occasionally rugby. I also like going out and taking holidays from time to time to relax and recharge.
Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department?
Before moving to the treasury department, I worked in accounts, where I trained several members of the finance team. They’re now able to perform their duties confidently and without supervision.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?
I would advise anyone aspiring to work in a finance department to focus heavily on reconciliations, covering the General Ledger, bank accounts, suppliers, and customers. It’s also important to be able to analyze and explain trends and differences in transactions within the GL and age analysis.

One valuable leadership lesson I’ve learned is that hard work and determination consistently lead to success.
What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?
There’s not much that’s surprising, but I do enjoy watching sports, traveling, and exploring new experiences.
If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?
If I could have any superpower to help me at work, it would be super speed, so I could accomplish more than I currently can.

My strategy for staying productive during long workdays is to stay focused and work strategically.
If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?
If I could relive one day from my career, it would be Friday, so I could enjoy a long weekend.
