Top of his class. Twice.

Thivesan Govender didn’t just qualify. He excelled. Top matric learner. BCom Accounting summa cum laude. Top postgraduate student. CA(SA). Promoted to Senior Fund Accountant within five years.

That’s not luck. That’s discipline.

Today he works where precision matters. Investor reporting. Complex fund structures. IFRS and private equity guidelines.

When new entities enter the business, he doesn’t guess.

He goes back to the standards. He analyses. He reviews himself critically.

Because in fund accounting, mistakes are expensive.

What time do you usually wake up on weekends?

08:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Early Bird

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

I usually start my morning with some exercise, then get myself ready and set up for the day ahead.

What sparked your interest in accounting and finance?

I was introduced to the CA profession in high school and learned about the opportunities and benefits it offers. That exposure really sparked my interest and inspired me, as a young student, to pursue a career in accounting and work toward becoming a CA.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?

One of my earliest defining moments was at the end of high school, where there was a close race for the top academic position, which I was proud to achieve.

Later, I was recognised as the top overall student in both my third year of BCom Accounting and again during my postgraduate year.

More recently, being promoted to Senior Fund Accountant within five years at Vantage Capital has been a significant milestone in my professional journey.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?

I'm the Senior Fund Accountant.

How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?

I contribute to the broader financial strategy by providing input on investor-specific reporting, ensuring accuracy and clarity in the information shared. This plays an important role in strengthening our relationships with funders and maintaining their confidence in the business.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is when new entities are introduced into the organisation. These situations require detailed analysis to ensure they are accounted for and reported on correctly.

I’ve managed this by consistently referring to IFRS standards and private equity guidelines, which provide a solid framework and help me approach each new entity with clarity and confidence.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?

I rely on strong time management and regular self-review to maintain a high standard of work and ensure accuracy. I also believe in being compassionate yet firm when coordinating with others, which helps ensure that deliverables are completed on time while maintaining positive working relationships.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods

During particularly busy periods, I make a conscious effort to step away from my desk at regular intervals to clear my head and reset before diving back into work. It helps me stay focused and productive throughout the day.

I also prioritise exercise after hours, making sure my body gets the same level of attention as my mind.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies or activities that help you recharge?

I’m an avid gamer, and I find that spending an hour or two on my PlayStation over the weekend is a great way to unwind.

I also enjoy reading, particularly books on finance and science. The science books, especially, expose me to new ideas and perspectives, which I find both fascinating and refreshing.

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department? How do you help develop the skills of others?

I actively support members of the finance team and formally coach one colleague. I share updates on developments in tax and IFRS to help keep the team informed and technically strong. I also take the time to understand where individuals may need support, so I can provide guidance that is practical and relevant to their growth.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?

I would emphasise the importance of strong time management and self-discipline, as workloads in finance can become demanding and require tasks to be prioritised effectively to meet deadlines.

Being self-critical in a constructive way helps improve the quality of work and builds confidence among senior team members when assigning additional responsibilities. Diligence and consistency are also valuable, as finance roles can sometimes be routine-based, and demonstrating resilience and reliability is essential for long-term success in the department.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career.

One of the most valuable pieces of advice I received early in my career was to always think about the bigger picture. It didn’t fully resonate with me when I started as an audit trainee, but it makes much more sense now that I’m in a senior role in a smaller firm.

It encouraged me to reflect more carefully on the impact of my decisions, not only in my professional work but also in my personal life and consider the broader consequences of my actions.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio? A hobby, interest, or fun fact?

I enjoy acting and have taken part in two stage productions earlier in my life.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be? Predicting financial trends? Master multitasking?

If I could have a superpower to help me in my job, it would be the ability to control time, so deadlines would never be a source of stress.

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?

I stay productive during long workdays by keeping the end result in mind. Focusing on the final outcome helps motivate me to push through and maintain momentum throughout the day.

If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why? What made that day special?

I would relive the first year we signed off on our financial statements, as it was my first experience of a signing date from the client side after spending two years as an audit trainee. It was a meaningful and rewarding moment because it represented the successful conclusion of several months of dedicated hard work and effort.

His edge isn’t just intelligence. It’s mindset. Time management. Self-discipline. Big-picture thinking.

“Education is the most powerful weapon.”

That belief built his career. From audit trainee… To signing off financials on the client side.

That first signing date?

Relief. Validation. Growth.

When pressure builds, he resets.

Walks away. Exercises. Refocuses. Then delivers.

This is what modern finance leadership looks like.

Focused. Technical. Accountable.
