Prenesha Singh nearly gave up on her dream of becoming a professional accountant, until a mentor reignited her belief.

After financial struggles delayed her degree, she found her second wind through SAIPA’s Project Achiever programme. Today, as a Senior Associate at Finance and Tax Solutions, she’s delivering remote financial solutions to global clients, with empathy, precision, and power.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re falling behind, Prenesha’s story will remind you: it’s not about how fast you go — it’s about not giving up.

What time do you usually wake up on weekends?

09:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Night Owl

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

Waking up early isn’t really my thing, so the first hour of my morning is about easing into the day. I use that time to mentally prepare, get myself focused, and set the tone for what’s ahead.

What sparked your interest in accounting and finance?

I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers and knew I wanted to become an accountant even before high school. What really drew me in is the way accounting turns raw information into something practical and useful, whether that’s helping a client improve their business or meet compliance requirements. Honestly, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?

A major milestone in my career was qualifying as a Professional Accountant (SA) in 2022 through SAIPA. For a long time, I had let go of the idea of becoming a CA(SA) because financial challenges slowed my progress and made finishing my degree feel like the main goal. At that point, I planned to qualify and simply move forward.

A mentor stepped in and encouraged me to aim higher, giving me the confidence to try. I joined the Project Achiever programme, and that decision changed everything. Earning this qualification shaped the kind of accountant I am today and set the direction for my career from there.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?

I’m part of the Managed Services team, where we provide end-to-end finance support and tailored solutions to international clients based on their specific needs.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?8

One of the biggest challenges has been working remotely with international clients and making sure they still feel connected and supported, as they would in a face-to-face environment. I’ve addressed this by focusing on clear, consistent communication and being present and engaged in every interaction. Keeping my camera on during calls, communicating regularly via video and email, and maintaining a high standard of service all help bridge the distance and ensure clients feel well supported.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?

Clear and consistent communication is essential. By regularly discussing current and potential risks, we’re able to address issues early and put the right controls in place. This proactive approach helps us manage financial operations effectively and maintain a high standard of service.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods

Staying balanced during busy periods comes down to being intentional with my time. I set clear boundaries between work and personal life to avoid burnout and make sure I have space to recharge. I also take regular breaks throughout the day, as even short pauses help maintain focus and productivity. Outside of work, I prioritise self-care by making time for activities that help me unwind, whether that’s exercising, reading, or spending time with the people I care about.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies or activities that help you recharge?

Being an introvert means that I recharge best at home or in a quiet place. It may sound boring, but just being in my own space is what I enjoy outside of work. Whether it's watching my favorite series or movie, doing yoga, or building a puzzle, these are the things that help me recharge.

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department? How do you help develop the skills of others?

Yes, I do support other team members. My approach is to start with the bigger picture before getting into the steps. When people understand why something is done and how the process fits together, the skill itself becomes much easier to learn. I’ve found this makes the learning more practical and effective.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?

Focus on mastering the basics. A solid understanding of debits and credits, assets, liabilities, and the core principles of accounting makes everything else much easier. Once your foundation is strong, the more complex areas of accounting start to make sense because they’re all built on those fundamentals.

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career.

Trust in your abilities. Confidence in your skills has been a guiding principle for me and has helped me navigate some of the most challenging moments in my career.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?

A fun fact about me that’s not in my professional bio is that I’m a big BTS fan and a proud member of ARMY!

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?

I make sure to take regular breaks throughout the day, pausing to recharge helps me stay focused and productive even during long workdays.

Prenesha doesn’t just crunch numbers, she builds trust from across oceans. Her superpower? Clear communication, deep client care, and the kind of mentorship that changes careers.

Quiet, introverted, and resilient, she proves that accountants don’t need to shout to be powerful. They just need to show up, stay grounded, and never forget the basics.
