Genéveve Storm Krüger never planned on becoming an accountant. But when a short-term gig turned into a long-term passion, she ditched the courtroom dreams for cashflows and KPIs. In just two years, she’s gone from youngest trainee to global accountant, all while training for marathons and smashing board exams.

Her story proves that curiosity, courage, and a caffeine-fueled Google Sheet can take you places you never imagined.

What time do you usually wake up on weekends?

08:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Night Owl

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

I start my morning with a hot cup of coffee to ease into the day.

What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?

I originally had my sights set on a career in law, that was the plan all through high school. But after matric, I realised I preferred practical, hands-on learning rather than the traditional university route, so I started studying online. I looked into legal roles but somehow found myself in an accounting position instead. What was meant to be a temporary job as an Accounting Assistant quickly turned into something more. I genuinely enjoyed the work and decided to pursue the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation.

Even early on, I saw how important finance is, especially for small businesses. Good financial management can be the difference between success and failure. I was drawn in by how the industry is constantly evolving, with new systems and ways of thinking. What really grabbed me, though, was the chance to break the old-school idea of what an accountant is “supposed” to be. I enjoy challenging that perception and bringing a more dynamic, creative approach to the role.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?

One of the biggest milestones in my career was passing two of my CIMA board exams just seven months apart, and on the first try for both. A defining moment for me was being the youngest Trainee Accountant at the first firm I worked at. Instead of feeling imposter syndrome, I felt proud and grateful. I had worked hard to get there, and it was rewarding to see that effort pay off. What made it even more meaningful was the support I received from my colleagues and friends. They genuinely believed in me and constantly encouraged me, which made a big difference.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?

In my current role, I work as an Accountant for a healthcare company based in the United States.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my current role was navigating Google Sheets and the complexity that comes with building out detailed financial data. To overcome it, I spent time learning the ins and outs of the platform, focusing on its functions, formulas, and features. Over time, I became confident using it and now actually enjoy creating and building new sheets. I’ve also started using automations to present financial data in more dynamic and insightful ways, which has made a real difference in how we work.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?

To manage the company’s financial operations effectively, I rely on accounting software for tasks like bookkeeping, account management, and generating accurate reports. We’ve integrated automation wherever possible, for example, linking data sources to update records in real time, which helps reduce manual errors. I also make a point to stay current with industry trends and new technologies so I can keep improving our processes and work more efficiently.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.

To stay balanced during busy periods, I focus on setting clear boundaries, knowing when to log off and step away is key. I’m careful not to overcommit and try to keep my workload manageable by setting realistic expectations. It helps to know your limits, prioritize what really needs to get done, and make time to recharge. That way, the stress doesn’t pile up and become unmanageable.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I’m a passionate runner and was recently proud to be selected as part of the ASICS FrontRunner team. Staying active and committed to my training helps me recharge and stay grounded. Whether I’m following a structured plan or just heading out for a run to clear my head, it’s had a big impact on my motivation, both professionally and personally.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?

If you’re looking to build a career in finance, my biggest piece of advice is to stay flexible and open to change. The field is constantly evolving, so it’s important to adapt and find better, more efficient ways of working. I live by the mindset of never stopping learning, whether that’s through short courses, earning new qualifications, keeping up with industry updates, or exploring new tools and software. Being curious and committed to growing your knowledge will really set you apart. Keep an open mind and treat learning as something you do throughout your entire career.

Find joy in the simplest of moments and mundane days and life will always be fulfilling!

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your caree

One of the most valuable leadership lessons I’ve learned is to never let someone else decide your path. If there’s something you want to achieve, go after it with focus and determination. Your career is in your hands, and it’s up to you to shape it. Believing in yourself, especially when others doubt you, is what pushes you to grow and become the best version of yourself.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?

Something surprising that isn’t in my professional bio is my passion for history. I enjoy exploring random historical facts and learning about the interesting events and people that have shaped our world.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?

If I could choose any superpower to help me at work, it would definitely be mastering multitasking.

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?

My go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays is to take a short break, get up, go for a walk, make a cup of coffee, and recharge.

If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?

If I could relive one day from my career, it would be the day I joined my first accounting firm in 2023. Moving from working solo to being part of a great team was a huge milestone for me. That day stood out because it opened the door to many new learning opportunities and growth, all while working with talented and supportive colleagues. It really felt like a key turning point in my career.

Genéveve isn’t just changing the perception of accountants, she’s changing the game. She’s living proof that learning never stops, and that no one gets to decide your limits but you.
