From early-morning Power BI reports to mentoring future finance leaders, Anele’s role is about turning insight into impact.

What time do you usually wake up on weekends?
7:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Night Owl

How do you spend the first hour of your day?
I usually start my morning by checking emails, then reviewing financial data on Power BI, and finally setting priorities for the day ahead.

What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?
Back in high school, I was always curious about the published financials of listed companies. Even though I didn’t fully understand them at the time, I was fascinated and knew I wanted to one day have the skills to make sense of them and even prepare them myself. That’s when I realised a career in accounting was the right path for me.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?
One of the key milestones in my career was qualifying as an ACMA/CGMA through CIMA. Another defining moment has been my growth within my current company. I started as a Management Accountant and, within about six months, was promoted to Financial Manager. It was incredibly humbling to receive that level of trust from leadership so early on.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?
I'm a Finance Manager.

How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?
I contribute by analysing the financials to identify and highlight both financial and operational inefficiencies. I share these insights with the relevant functional heads, and when underperforming cost centres are flagged, it leads to focused improvement initiatives aimed at resolving the issues and strengthening the bottom line.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is managing an overwhelming workload. I overcame it by learning to delegate certain tasks within the finance team, which helped distribute the responsibilities more effectively and improved overall efficiency.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?
We make use of Power BI.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.
To stay balanced during busy periods, I make sure to get enough sleep, take regular breaks during the day, and of course, rely on a good cup of coffee to keep me going.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy traveling and discovering new places.

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department?
Yes, I do. I approach team development in two parts: supporting their formal studies and helping them gain the practical experience they need, both technical and soft skills. For example, I encouraged one team member to register with CIMA and another to continue her studies in Business Management. I also assign tasks that are designed to grow their capabilities and prepare them for leadership roles. I always tell them to aim to be ready to take over my role one day.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department?
In addition to earning a qualification in accounting or finance, it's important to develop soft skills like communication, resilience, and leadership. These will serve you well in any finance role. Also, don’t hesitate to take on opportunities to learn or grow, even if they fall outside your current responsibilities. Every bit of experience counts.

What’s your favourite quote or mantra that motivates you?
"You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending"

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career.
The quote by C.S. Lewis: “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.”

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?
Something surprising about me that’s not in my professional bio is that I’m hooked on crime investigation documentaries, I just can’t get enough of them.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?
Multitasking powers would be great!

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?
My go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays is to take regular breaks to stretch and enjoy a cup of coffee.

If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?
If I could relive one day from my career, it would be my first day as an intern. I was given a tour of the factory at a paper packaging and printing company. Seeing the manufacturing process of product packages and labels I’d seen on supermarket shelves was fascinating. That experience deepened my interest in CIMA and sparked my passion for working in manufacturing. Now, I’m proud to say I’m CIMA qualified and working in the packaging industry.
