How the CIBA and FASSET relationship works for ATOs and their interns

ATO GUIDANCE

As a CIBA-approved ATO, you train learners towards a CIBA designation while they do real work in your practice. Many ATOs also want to know what CIBA's relationship with FASSET means for them and their interns.

This guide sets out what your ATO status gives you, how CIBA works with FASSET, how internship stipends work, and where to go when you have a question.

What your ATO status gives you

Your ATO status allows you to recruit learners and give them the practical experience they need for a CIBA designation. This is how it works:

1.      You recruit a learner and register them on your ATO profile.

2.      The learner receives a logbook. It tracks their training towards the designation you have identified.

3.      The learner works in your practice until they complete the practical experience the designation requires.

4.      The learner takes the CIBA assessment.

5.      If successful, the learner takes up CIBA membership under that designation.

ATO status is for practitioners and employers with real work to do. While your learners build their experience, they are working for you. They do work you would otherwise do yourself, or pay employees to do. That is where the value of ATO status sits.

ATO status is not designed for training centres or academies. Without day-to-day accounting work in your business, your learners will have no practical experience to record in their logbooks.

How CIBA works with FASSET

CIBA does not have a single, standing memorandum of understanding (MOU) with FASSET. We sign an MOU for each joint project, as and when we work on one together.

What matters for ATOs is that CIBA has internship programmes registered with FASSET. That registration gives your interns a route to apply for FASSET stipends. It does not give CIBA, or any ATO, an automatic right to funding.

ATO registration is a CIBA offering. FASSET plays no part in approving or registering ATOs.

How internship stipends work

FASSET opens funding windows from time to time. During an open window, interns on a CIBA internship programme registered with FASSET can apply for a stipend.

  1. Watch for CIBA's notice. We advertise FASSET funding windows as soon as we become aware of them.

  2. Check that your intern is on a CIBA internship programme registered with FASSET.

  3. The intern applies within the window, following FASSET's requirements for that window.

  4. FASSET decides who receives funding and communicates the outcome.

Funding is never guaranteed. FASSET decides at its own discretion, and applying does not mean a stipend will follow.

Plan each placement so that it works for your practice whether or not a stipend is approved.

From time to time, FASSET also invites employers to apply for internship grants for interns they have already recruited. We share these invitations in the same way when we become aware of them.

Who handles what

If you or your intern applied to FASSET, take questions about that application to FASSET. CIBA cannot respond on FASSET's behalf.
